OTTAWA, ON – Atlético Ottawa set a new record in their preliminary round of the TELUS Canadian Championship, thrashing Valour FC under the lights at TD Place. Goals from Ollie Bassett, Rubén del Campo, Alberto Zapater and Ballou Tabla thrilled the Ottawa crowd who were treated to Atlético’s biggest-ever win and the largest win ever recorded in this competition.

KEY MOMENTS

Atlético Ottawa beat Valour FC 7-0 at TD Place to progress in the TELUS Canadian Championship.

1-0: Ollie Bassett opened the scoring with a penalty kick after Matteo de Brienne had been brought down in the penalty box (13′).

2-0: Spanish legend Alberto Zapater scored with his head from a Maxime Tissot free-kick (29′).

This was Zapater’s first goal for the club since joining in 2023

3-0: A third goal was not long in coming as, in the same minute, Ruben del Campo found himself alone in the box and confidently hit the right-hand post (29′).

4-0: A brace Zapater followed, reacting quickly at the back post as Amer Didić headed Bassett’s corner back across the face of the goal (37′).

5-0: Ballou Tabla got in on the act in the second period, cutting inside the last defender and finishing with his weak foot having been set up by Manny Aparicio. (62′)

This was Tabla’s first goal at TD Place since returning to the club after a stunning 2022 season, having opened his account last weekend in Halifax.

6-0: Just two minutes later, Ballou followed up with an assist, playing a perfect ball to team-mate Bassett, who curled the ball into the net (64′).

7-0: Del Campo completed his brace with a composed, closed-range finish, benefiting from some great work by Samuel Salter to keep the ball in play (68′).

Spanish striker Rubén del Campo scored his first goal in front of the TD Place crowd tonight, having opened his account for Atlético last weekend against Halifax Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League.

Del Campo ended the match with 5 shots (all on target), scored 2 of his match leading 3 big chances and created 3 chances for his teammates.

Not shying away from the defensive side of the game, the 24-year-old won 4 fouls (1st), 5 aerial duels (1st) and competed in 11 duels (2nd) with a 45.5% win rate.
