South Georgia Tormenta FC hosted Forward Madison FC Saturday night in a match that saw both teams dominate spells of the game. The game ended 1-1 after Niall Watson scored a stoppage-time equalizer to steal a point from the ‘Mingos.

Forward Madison FC held a large portion of possession during the first 20 minutes of Saturday’s bird battle. The first chance for the visitors came in the 18th minute when Tormenta goalkeeper Ford Parker saved the initial shot, and Preston Kilwien blocked the follow-up, keeping the game locked at 0-0.

Tormenta FC held its own spell of possession, taking control during the second 20 minutes of the first half. However, another chance for Madison came in the 41st minute, causing team captain Jake Dengler to make a heroic sliding block to keep the match all square going into the break.

South Georgia made its first substitution after Daniel Steedman came off the pitch with an injury in the 60th minute. Midfielder Conor Doyle came on for the injured Steedman and played the final 30 minutes plus stoppage time for Tormenta FC.

The visiting Forward Madison FC opened the scoring in the 69th minute after Devin Boyce found himself with space in the center of the Tormenta FC box. The opener was Madison’s first goal of the 2024 season.

Tormenta Head Coach Ian Cameron immediately made two more substitutions in the 71st minute, taking off Aaron Lombardi and Mason Tunbridge for Gabriel Rodriguez and Callum Stretch. The match was Lombardi and Tunbridge’s first start for South Georgia.

Seven minutes later, Cameron made his final two substitutions for the night, taking off Jackson Khoury and Sebastian Vivas for debutants Watson and Pedro Campos.

In the 96th minute, Nick Akoto played a one-two with Ajmeer Spengler before sending a cross toward the six-yard box. Rodriguez, who was at the near post, flung himself towards the crossed ball but was unable to get his head on the end of it. However, Watson was waiting at the far post and chested it down before slotting the equalizer into the back of the net.

South Georgia resumes play on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, in the opening round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open against FC America CFL Spurs here at Tormenta Stadium.
