Erling Haaland has revealed that last year’s exploits are acting as an inspiration to achieve even more at Manchester City.

The Norwegian obliterated goal scoring records by netting 52 times as he fired City towards an historic Treble, with the Premier League champions hopeful he will sign a new contract.

Haaland insisted he remains content at the Etihad Stadium as Real Madrid continue to monitor the 23-year-old’s future, with City looking to book a place in the Champions League quarter-finals against Copenhagen on Wednesday night.

‘I’m really happy, especially with the people I’m surrounded with,’ Haaland said. ‘The manager, the directors, the board – they are a group of amazing people and I’m really happy. If I say this now it’s probably going to be a massive headline… you never know what the future brings, but I’m happy.

‘My focus mainly is on the pitch, there are a lot of games. Two days ago it was derby, now the Champions League, Sunday is Liverpool. I think I should focus on that.

‘You can think about last year in two ways. One thing, I came here and won it all. The other is I’m 23 and I won everything but got the taste of how it is to win everything. The way I work is when I feel this I want to do it again. Easy as that!’

Haaland has smashed 28 goals so far this term, including one against rivals Manchester United and five at Luton Town last week.

He laughed that Lionel Messi might have to retire before he wins a Ballon d’Or and accepts that criticism of missed chances comes with the territory after the glaring miss at the weekend.
