Mason Greenwood is on Atletico Madrid‘s shortlist in the club’s hunt for a new forward ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports. 

The 22-year-old Manchester United loanee has been playing in Madrid at local rivals Getafe since the start of the season after agreeing by mutual consent to continue his career away from his boyhood club. 

The decision was taken following the conclusion of an internal investigation into Greenwood’s conduct, after January 2022 charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour were withdrawn by Crown Prosecution Service following the withdrawal of key witnesses just over a year later. 

After 18 months sidelined from competitive action in the wake of his initially charges, Greenwood has been building back his form as a regular starter at the tenth-placed LaLiga side.

But as per Telegraph Sport, the player could yet move only 20km north of Estadio Coliseum at the season’s end. 

The player will see out the season with Getafe, and then is set to return to England with a year left on his Man United contract – although the club could yet trigger a year-long extension, as in his 2021 deal.   

Atletico had a chance to take in Greenwood up close during their derby meeting in mid-December.
