Sheffield United are set to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate on loan until the end of the season after fending off interest from Bundesliga side Stuttgart.

Holgate spent the first half of the season on loan at Championship side Southampton but failed to break into their best XI, making just seven appearances.

Everton see the move to the South Yorkshire club as a good move for his development.

The 27-year-old – who has been a long-term target for manager Chris Wilder – has not enjoyed the best of times over the past 18 months and is eager to reignite his career at Bramall Lane.

Mail Sport reported earlier on deadline day how Holgate was expected to undergo a medical this afternoon with the Blades, with the former Barnsley youngster set to add defensive solidity.

After Tuesday’s damaging 3-2 defeat by Crystal Palace, Wilder’s side are nine points off safety after winning just two of their 22 Premier League matches.

Meanwhile, Everton are unlikely to do any further business this window.
