KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Current have signed veteran defender Mallory Weber to a one-year contract. The eight-year veteran will remain with the Current through the 2024 season.

“We’re so excited to have Mallory with us for another season,” said general manager Camille Ashton. “She’s been working so hard and it’s important to us that we’re able to support her as she’s working to get back on the field.”

“I am beyond grateful to be back in Kansas City for this historic year,” said Weber. “This club has gone above and beyond in taking care of me through this injury. I’m counting down the days until I get to step on OUR field and play for our city and fans.”

Weber got her initial start in the NWSL with the Western New York Flash after being selected with the fourth pick in the second round of the 2016 NWSL College Draft. She was traded to Portland later that year. She played 45 games with the Thorns before signing with the Utah Royals in 2019.

The speedy defender was one of the original players who were transferred to the expansion roster for the new Kansas City franchise in 2020. After a short loan to Adelaide United in the Australian W-League Weber joined the club, making her season debut and scoring her first goal for the club in a Challenge Cup match against OL Reign (now Seattle Reign). She has 21 appearances for Kansas City with 15 starts, mainly as a defender.

Weber suffered a torn ACL in the first match of the 2022 season. After working through her rehabilitation, she made her return April 19 in a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dash. Unfortunately, after entering the match in the 69th minute, Weber re-injured her knee and has been working through her rehabilitation since.

Weber and her teammates open warm-weather camp in Irvine, California today through February 5. The Kansas City Current will open the historic CPKC Stadium in the NWSL’s opening game of the 2024 regular season March 16.
