Eddie Howe says Newcastle have NO money and NO friends as he counted the cost of yet another major injury and financial rules that prevent the Saudi-owned club from buying players.
The Magpies will be without Joelinton for at least six weeks after he suffered a thigh injury during last weekend’s FA Cup win at Sunderland, taking the list of absentees back into double figures.
Howe would like to sign Kalvin Phillips from Saturday’s opponents Manchester City but a loan fee north of £7million and an obligation to buy makes the deal difficult for Newcastle to do.
‘I’m not sure there’s many clubs out there that are willing to help us currently,’ said Howe. ‘To agree a loan deal, you need the club to agree to that deal. So we’re in that moment where I’m not sure we have many friends in the market.’
Newcastle were linked with a move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke this week but Howe scoffed at that suggestion, primarily because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

‘That’s a frustrating story for me because, yes I love Dominic Solanke, I signed him and I rate him very highly. But we have not made an enquiry for him and we don’t have the ability to sign a player of that level,’ said Howe.
Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales spoke to reporters on Thursday about needing to sell players to allow them to spend under PSR. He also said there was very little scope for a permanent signing this month, a message reiterated by Howe on Friday.
‘We’re not shutting the door on everything,’ he said. ‘But certainly as I sit here now, no, we’re not going to bring anyone in. But that may change as the window unfolds.
