Gio Reyna could leave German giants Borussia Dortmund by the end of the January transfer window, as Marseille and Sevilla are the reported frontrunners to land the American midfielder.

Reyna has been with Dortmund since 2019 but has had an injury-riddled stay in the Bundesliga where he’s never held down a long-term integral role with the team.

Reyna has now been linked to Marseille, who are sixth in the Ligue 1 table, the highest spot for a team not qualifying for European competition next season, and Sevilla, who are trying to survive relegation in 16th place of La Liga, according to Sky Sports.

Borussia Dortmund is the only club for which the 21-year-old Reyna has had a first-team appearance for.

While his time with Dortmund has been turbulent, Reyna’s appearances with the United States men’s national team over the last 18 months also haven’t been smooth sailing.

Reyna only played for 52 minutes during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as a second-half substitute against England and The Netherlands.

After the Dutch eliminated the Stars and Stripes from Qatar, Reyna revealed himself to be the player USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter almost sent home from the tournament due to his behavior.

That started a domino effect that included Danielle Reyna, Gio’s mother and wife of USMNT legend Claudio Reyna, informing US Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart of a 1991 incident of domestic violence between Berhalter and his wife.

Gio Reyna and Berhalter have seemingly smoothed things over in the year since leaving Qatar, as the latter was retained as USMNT coach and the midfielder has continued to play for the team in run-up to this summer’s Copa America.

Reyna has made 87 appearances for Dortmund since 2019, with the most during a single season coming in 2020-21, with 32 caps.
