Brighton are continuing talks with Boca Juniors over an £8m deal for left wing-back Valentin Barco.

The 19-year-old has been on their radar for some time and they have been in pole position to secure his signature since the summer.

Manchester City are also understood to have shown interest in hijacking the Seagulls’ swoop for the youngster, who is a Boca Juniors regular.

Brighton’s scouting network in the Americas has helped them land numerous emerging talents over the years.

Their status as a club in Europe who can still offer a clear pathway to first-team football is attractive.

In the summer, they sold Moises Caicedo – recruited directly from Ecuador – to Chelsea for a British record £115m.

Meanwhile, Brighton goalkeeper James Beadle has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season.

Beadle, 19, spent the first half of the season on loan at Oxford United and was impressive in their League One promotion push before being recalled.

Circumstances are different at Sheffield Wednesday, who are currently in the Championship relegation zone, though their form has picked up significantly under Danny Rohl.

Brighton are well-stocked between the sticks with Jason Steele and Bart Verbruggen swapping the gloves, so a loan is by far his best chance of regular football.
