Langley, BC – Vancouver FC today announced the club has traded its second round pick (10th overall) in the 2024 Canadian Premier League-U SPORTS Draft, presented by Degree, to Cavalry FC in exchange for the 15th pick in the draft and future considerations.
Vancouver now holds the second and 15th overall picks in the 2024 CPL-U SPORTS Draft, presented by Degree, which will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. It will be available for free to all viewers via OneSoccer’s and CBC Sports’ YouTube channels, as well as the Canadian Premier League’s YouTube channel.
The draft is open to any U SPORTS underclassmen with one to four years of U SPORTS eligibility remaining, provided they are in good standing with their school’s athletic program and educational institution and are planning to return to school the following year. Once selected, players may be invited to pre-season training with their prospective club, where they can compete for a roster spot for the 2024 CPL season.
The CPL-U SPORTS Draft plays a key role in the men’s player development pathway in Canada, serving as a critical link between the Canadian university and professional games since its inaugural iteration in 2018. The draft provides a unique opportunity for student athletes to earn professional experience while maintaining their eligibility to return to U SPORTS competition.
Vancouver’s previous CPL-U SPORTS Draft picks include defender Anthony White, who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2023 draft and went on to sign a professional contract with the Eagles, and forward Ameer Kinani, who represented Vancouver on a U SPORTS contract in 2023. VFC midfielder Gabriel Bitar was twice selected in the CPL-U SPORTS Draft, picked first overall by Cavalry FC in the inaugural draft in 2018 and sixth overall by Cavalry the following year.
