The San Diego Sockers – presented by Kaiser Permanente – play an interstate back-to-back in the Major Arena Soccer League this weekend, taking on the Dallas Sidekicks in Texas on Saturday night before returning home Sunday to host the Empire Strykers at Pechanga Arena San Diego for a 6:05pm kickoff. Sunday’s match will feature the debut of Mexican star Marco Fabián as an opponent in San Diego. Recently signed by the Strykers, Fabián will make his indoor soccer debut in Ontario Friday, then play his first road match with Empire on Sunday against the Sockers.
“We are excited to see international stars like Marco Fabián in our league,” said Sockers head coach/owner Phil Salvagio, “We hope all of San Diego and Tijuana will take this opportunity to come out and see Fabian for the first time playing indoor. Hopefully, we’ll be able to pull out a win in front of a huge crowd.”
Marco Fabián has been capped 43 times by Mexico, and played in both the 2014 and the 2018 FIFA World Cups. In the early stages of his professional career, the attacker impressed at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, his five goals helping El Tri claim the gold medal. At the club level, Fabián reached legendary status with Chivas de Guadalajara of his native country between 2007 and 2015, suiting up nearly 200 times for the goats. Other career stops included German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Philadelphia Union as well as three more Mexican first division teams, Cruz Azul (on loan from Chivas), FC Juárez, and Mazatlán FC.
The Sockers, back-to-back winners of the MASL Shield for the top record in the league, are off to a 2-0 start. San Diego and Empire will meet six times this season, portending the start of a strong rivalry between Fabián and San Diego.
