LOS ANGELES – Angel City Football Club (ACFC) announced today that center back Vanessa Gilles will extend her loan to Lyon through June 30, 2025. This timeline was part of a long-term plan, but due to FIFA rules, the clubs were unable to fully extend the loan through June of 2025 until now.

“Angel City continues to foster the growth and development of our players, and Vanessa’s desire to remain at Lyon is her growth trajectory,” said ACFC General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano. “Vanessa will always be part of Angel City’s history as our first regular-season goal scorer and we look forward to her return.”

Gilles, a 2020 Olympic gold medalist with Canada, played an integral role in the inaugural ACFC squad, including scoring the club’s first-ever regular-season goal on April 29, 2022 in front of a sold-out home crowd. Gilles currently has 34 caps for Canada, with three goals in 2,943 minutes in international competition. She played a key role at the 2020 Olympics, converting Canada’s final penalty kick in the quarterfinal against Brazil.

Gilles joined ACFC from Division 1 Féminine team FC Girondins de Bordeaux after a four-year stint with the club. She played collegiate soccer at University of Cincinnati, where she accumulated numerous accolades, including the 2014 American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team and the 2017 American Athletic Conference Co-Defender of the Year award.
