The Kansas City Comets (3-0) are off to a three-game winning streak to start the season after coming away with a 7-3 win over the Harrisburg Heat (0-2) in their visit to Equine Arena at The Farm Show Complex on Saturday.
It was the first win on the road for head coach Stefan Stokic and it came against the Heat in their home opener. The Comets remain unbeaten against the Heat as they are now 10-0 in the all-time series.
The matchup didn’t start how the Comets would have imagined it. Harrisburg jumped out in front first after Dominic Francis made it 1-0 for the hosts following a quick swivel before a left-footed strike into the far corner.
That lead did not last long. Over a minute later, Lucas Sousa answered for the Comets scoring the equalizer. A determined Rian Marques put the Comets in front 2-1 when his effort assisted by John Sosa found the back of the net.
The Comets continued scoring into the second quarter when Zach Reget rifled a pass from Ignacio Flores into the top corner to make it 3-1. Nicolau Neto made a couple of important saves to keep Harrisburg to just a goal before halftime.
After having a Harrisburg goal called back and killing a penalty, the Comets went up 4-2 when Reget took credit after his pressure forced an errant pass that ended up in the back of the net. Harrisburg ended their scoreless streak when Robert Williamson scored for the hosts.
Comets rookie midfielder Mikey Lenis scored his first career goal with a powerful right-footed strike. That was followed by a Christian Anderaos goal to make it 6-2 in the third period.
Harrisburg and Kansas City exchanged goals in the fourth quarter. Danny DiPrima got on the scoresheet for the hosts before Reget finished off his hat trick against six attackers.
Reget finished the night with four points from three goals and an assist. Flores and Ray Lee each recorded three blocks as they helped Nicolau Neto pick up his third straight win. The Comets defended special teams well, killing both power plays they faced in the second half.
Stokic is thrilled with the start to the season, especially now that the Comets have held each opponent to three goals or less. “If we want to be a championship team we have to be able to win games and not concede much. Even the goal that we got scored on could have been avoided as well but that’s indoor soccer. The boys are doing great defensively.”
