Independence, Missouri – The St. Louis Ambush didn’t generate much offense in their first road game of the 2023-24 season when they clashed with the Kansas City Comets Sunday at the Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. The 7-2 win gives the Comets a 2-0-0 record on the young season, while the Ambush come home at 0-1-1.

The Comets drew first blood in the eighth minute of the match when Rian Marques sent a wall pass to Ramone Palmer, who was able to get off a shot out of reach of Ambush goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento. The home team enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kansas City went up 2-0 in the second minute of the second period when Zach Reget put a shot in the top of the net. Less than a minute later, Ray Lee increased the Comets’ lead to 3-0 on a restart off a pass from John Sosa. Less than another minute ticked by when Christian Anderaos found the back of the net to make it a 4-0 contest. Sosa scored one of his own in the last minute of the second frame, with a high shot out of Paulo’s reach, to give Kansas City a 5-0 lead at halftime.

With just under two minutes remaining in the third frame, St. Louis’ Richard Schmermund was blue-carded for a handball, giving Kansas City a penalty kick, which Marques completed for a 6-0 score.

In the fourth minute of the final quarter and in an effort to generate some much-need offense for his team, Nascimento came too far out of the goal, leaving an empty net that Lee took prompt advantage of for his second tally of the game and the seventh for the Comets. The Ambush avoided the shutout in the sixth minute when Mike Da-Silva scored on a restart off a pass from Lucas Almeida, making the score 7-1. Just over two minutes later, Bill Stimac found the mark with a top shelf shot to give St. Louis their second goal. The St. Louis comeback would prove to be too little, too late as Kansas City held on for the decisive 7-2 victory.

The Ambush will continue their quest for their first win of the season when they return home to The Family Arena to host the Empire Strykers on Saturday, December 9 at 6:05 p.m. CT.
