The Kansas City Comets are delighted to announce the return of record-setting forward Leo Gibson on a one-year contract. Per league and team policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Leo the Legend returns to the Comets strictly as a player following a four-year stint serving in a dual role as player and head coach. As the MASL’s all-time assists leader and the franchise leader in points, goals and assists, Gibson’s presence within the team will be critical.
Comets coach Stefan Stokic is thrilled to have Gibson remain with the organization, “Leo is a critical figure for the team. He adds another level with his experience and leadership. For us, it’s a privilege and honor to have him back on the field and playing.”
Gibson returns for his 14th season with the Comets, having originally signed with the organization ahead of its inaugural season in 2010-11. He remains the only active player to play for the Comets continuously. Goalkeepers Danny Waltman of the Tacomas Stars and Boris Pardo of the San Diego Sockers are the only other original 2010-11 Comets currently playing in the MASL.
“It is a privilege and honor to play another season, I am excited for the opportunity,” Gibson said. “I’m here to serve Coach Stokic and this team in the best way possible.”
The 5-foot-6 frame of Gibson was named 2014-15 MASL MVP after an incredible 2014-15 season where he set MASL single-season records for points (93), assists (45) and points per game (4.7), records that still stand today. He also helped the Comets to an undefeated regular season campaign in his MVP season after winning the MISL championship the year before.
A native of Monrovia, Liberia, Gibson played collegiately at King College in Tennessee before moving indoors in 2007 to play with the Detroit Ignition for two years. After playing single-season stints with the Rockford Rampage and Philadelphia Kixx, he made the life-changing move to Kansas City in 2010 and hasn’t left since.
The Comets’ legendary No. 14 also gives back to the community. He is a founding member of Kick for Christ, a Christian charity organization providing soccer gear and training to Liberia, West Africa and Kansas City youth.
Gibson and the Comets open up the regular season with a rivalry matchup against the Milwaukee Wave on Sunday, Nov. 26. Tickets for that contest and all home games are available at kccomets.com/tickets.
