Big Ten Regular Season Champions Men’s Soccer Hosts Rutgers in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State men’s soccer is in search of winning the double as it begins the Big Ten Tournament as the no. 2 seed, hosting no. 7 seeded Rutgers on Friday, Nov. 3. Kick off at Jeffrey Field is set for 6 p.m. 
 
After earning a share of the regular season title with a 1-1 draw at Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 29, the Nittany Lions look for their second conference trophy during the Big Ten Tournament.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned a 1-1 draw at Wisconsin to claim a share of the Big Ten regular season title for the second time in three years. 
  • After being down by one goal at halftime, Van Danielson scored his third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 and clinch the title for the Nittany Lions. 
  • The 2023 Regular Season title marks the fifth in program history and second under head coach Jeff Cook
  • This was the second time Penn State clinched the regular season in Madison, Wisc.

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State ranks first in the Big Ten in goals scored with 29 and second in points with 80.
  • Peter Mangione’s nine goals is the most scored in the conference and sixth highest scored nationally.
  • Kris Shakes ranks 13th in the nation in save percentage (.810) and first in the conference. Shakes’ seven shutouts are good for first in the conference and seventh in the nation.

SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS

  • The Scarlet Knights are the seven seed going into the Big Ten Tournament and concluded the regular season with a record of 5-7-3, 3-4-1 Big Ten.
  • Rutgers won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament last season, defeating eventual runner up Indiana in the Championship. 
  • Jackson Temple leads the team in goals with six, ranking him at fourth in the conference. 
  • Rutgers’ keeper is ranked last in the Big Ten in goals against average and shutouts with only one. 

PENN STATE –RUTGERS SERIES

  • This will be the first Penn State-Rutgers match up in the Big Ten Tournament since the Scarlet Knights joined the conference in 2014.
  • The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series 17-10 but the Scarlet Knights own the most recent two wins.
