Inter Milan chief executive Giuseppe Marotta has refused to rule out the possibility of Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana returning to the Italian club in the future.

Onana signed for United from Inter in July for a fee of £47.1million.

Although Onana hasn’t had the best of starts at United he remains highly regarded by Inter, who signed him on a free transfer last year.

Asked whether Onana could eventually return to Inter, Marotta told Gazetta Dello Sport: ‘I can’t predict the future, but in football anything can happen. For sure, it was a great chapter for Onana and for us.

‘It was also a successful deal to sign him for free and sell for that money.’

Onana made a mistake in allowing Brentford’s Mathias Jensen to score against United last weekend.

The 27-year-old has been unconvincing in goal for United with just two clean sheets in eight Premier League appearances, while he has conceded 12 times.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer claimed that Onana would be ‘finished’ at United if manager Erik ten Hag was to leave the club.

Speaking to Optus Sport, Schwarzer said: ‘It’s interesting because ten Hag obviously has brought in a number of ex-Ajax players that he’s worked with before in the in the Dutch League.

‘I’ve watched Onana quite a bit over the years. I know he played well, last year in Inter, but I’ve always questioned how good a goalkeeper he is.

‘I don’t know whether or not he’s going to be able to pull himself out of the trouble that he’s in. And I think if ten Hag he loses his job, I think Onana will be finished’.

Mail Sport’s Chris Sutton believes that United made a mistake by signing Onana and would have been better off persisting with David de Gea.
