EXCLUSIVE: Leeds United are in the hunt to sign James Milner on a free transfer from Liverpool – IF they can stay in the Premier League – but Brighton still lead the race
- Former England international is set to depart Anfield after eight seasons there
- Brighton can potentially offer Milner European football for 2023-24 campaign
- But an emotional return to Elland Road can’t be discounted if they’re in top-flight
Brighton lead the race for James Milner – but an emotional return to Leeds could be on the cards should the Yorkshire club avoid relegation.
The veteran Liverpool midfielder is leaving Anfield at the end of this season and Mail Sport understands there are a number of offers on the table.
Thanks to their league position, the high-flying Seagulls are viewed as the likeliest winners of the battle for the 37-year-old ex-England man.
However, Milner’s first club Leeds are in the hunt and a move back to Elland Road cannot be ruled out with no decision yet made.
Should his hometown side stand a chance, they will need to stay in the top flight.

Under the temporary guidance of Sam Allardyce, they currently occupy the final relegation spot and are a point behind Everton with two matches – at West Ham and at home to Tottenham – to play.
Brighton represent a very different prospect and are in sixth place, chasing European football.
Milner came through the ranks at Leeds, making his debut at the age of 16 in 2002.
He signed a five-year contract in 2003 but left for Newcastle United in 2004 with the club beset by financial problems.
Milner went on to star for Aston Villa and Manchester City ahead of his move to Liverpool but has often spoken of his affection for Leeds.
