Liverpool on the charge as situation is ‘evolving’ over two midfield stars wanted across the league

Reported Liverpool targets bAlexis Mac Allister and Declan Rice during a match

Liverpool are making progress in the pursuits of Alexis Mac Allister and Declan Rice, with one journalist suggesting the situation is ‘evolving’ with both, following contact with their respective clubs.

That the Reds’ midfield could do with a lick of paint is something that’s been evident throughout the season. Indeed, it’s an ageing area of the squad, and that will continue to hurt Jurgen Klopp’s side if there aren’t improvements.

That 37-year-old James Milner has featured often does not bode well. While he’s by no means a bad player, a side that wants to challenge for titles should surely be blessed with better, more exciting assets.

They had been one of the main sides in the hunt for Jude Bellingham, who fits that bill. The 19-year-old will surely be one of Europe’s best talents in any position for a decade, judging by his first few seasons in professional football.

However, the Reds dropped out of that race not long ago. Prioritising a proper rebuild was cited as a key reason for ditching their interest in the Borussia Dortmund star.

He’d have cost in excess of £100million, possibly by a long way, so the Reds decided that money could be better spent on bringing a few new faces into the fold.

They’re still on the hunt for midfielders, for good reason. Brighton’s Mac Allister and West Ham’s Rice are both seemingly on Klopp’s shortlist for next season.

They’re also wanted by a number of sides across the league: Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been linked with both men at one time or another, along with other sides.

However, Liverpool are now on the charge, potentially into the lead, for both men. Journalist Rudy Galetti has reported the pair are the ‘main targets’ for the Reds’ midfield.

He suggests contacts are ‘ongoing’ with both Brighton and West Ham, in terms of potential moves to Liverpool.

What’s more, he states the situation is ‘evolving’, and while there’s no mention of what that evolution entails, it would suggest the Reds are putting themselves in a good position to snare both.

Whether or not they would be able to afford that is another question. Indeed, Rice will surely be priced above £100million and Mac Allister will reportedly command £70million.

It would certainly be a massive statement if the Reds were to capture both men, though even one would be an improvement on their current midfield corps.
