Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has revealed he feels Alan Shearer “needs to be concerned” as Harry Kane is “still a young man” and is gunning for his goal record.
Kane has scored goals regularly throughout his Premier League career. After getting up to speed in his first campaign, he’s not had a bad season.
That’s evidenced in the fact his lowest tally since his first season – in which he played just 10 games – was 17. That came in the 2018/19 season, in which he missed 10 games.
The Tottenham striker has had a number of phenomenal seasons in front of goal in the Premier League. The current campaign is one of those – Kane is on 26 goals with three games still to go.
There’s a chance he breaks his record tally of 30 league goals, which he set in 2017/18. It’s another goals record that he’s got his eye on now, though.
Indeed, in scoring in Spurs’ recent 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, he moved past the only person – Wayne Rooney – between him and the league’s record scorer Alan Shearer.
Kane now has 209 goals, with Shearer still 51 goals ahead, on 260. It’s plausible that total is now just a couple of decent seasons away, especially given that, at 29, Kane is in his prime.
Palace manager Hodgson spoke after the game on Kane’s prowess in front of goal, and feels Shearer should now be fearful of him.
“He always scored in my four years previously at Palace. A real talent of a goal from a transitional situation,” he said.
“The way he got the ball and volleyed it into that space. We know how good he is in the air and he showed it again. His moment of brilliance won the game.
“He’s a fine player. What he has done for this club has been enormous. Since he made his debut for England he has gone from strength to strength.
“He is still a young man and I’m pretty certain Alan needs to be concerned because Harry will be breathing down his neck.”
Indeed, if Kane has another couple of seasons like he’s having this term, he will break the record within the next two years. Of course, that depends on him staying in the Premier League, but it’s very unlikely he’ll move on with the record firmly in his sight.
