Chicago Fire Strengthen Defensive Lines with New Deal for Carlos Terán

The Chicago Fire have announced a contract extension for 22-year-old Colombian center-back Carlos Teran through 2026, with an option for 2027.

Teran, who originally joined the Fire back in August of 2020 after some formative years with Colombian Liga BetPlay Dimayor club Envigado FC, received his U.S. permanent resident status in 2022 and does not hem up an international roster slot.

The defender has made nine appearances for the Chicago Fire during the 2023 season, scoring one goal in those games.

“Over the past year, Carlos has established himself as a competitor and starter for our club,” Chicago sporting director Georg Heitz said in a release. “His dedication and commitment demonstrate his desire to continue developing, and over time we believe he can be one of the best center backs in the league.”

The Fire believe in Teran as a key piece of a very international four-man defensive line that usually pairs him in the middle with Germany’s Rafael Czichos and features Frenchman Arnaud Souquet on the right with Venezuelan Miguel Navarro adding verticality on the left side.

It’s early days for the MLS 2023 season but the Fire have an obvious interest in pursuing their first ticket to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs since 2017. And there’s no better way to show that, than by showing you have committed to your defensive line.
