William Gallas reckons Arsenal need three signings in the summer transfer window to help the club challenge for the Premier League title again next season.
The Gunners’ title hopes took a huge blow on Wednesday night as Manchester City thrashed them 4-1 to take Arsenal’s fate out of their own hands.
Mikel Arteta’s side are still two points clear at the top of the Premier League table but second-placed City have two games in hand on their title rivals.
Many fans have now given up hope that they can hold off Man City with the Citizens having the momemtum but there is still the chance that City’s participation in the Champions League could throw up a strange result.
And Gallas insists there is no reason Arsenal shouldn’t be looking to challenge for the Premier League title again next season, especially if they can land three new defenders in the summer.
“Next season Arsenal will play in the Champions League,” Gallas told Genting Casino. “That is a big competition that everyone wants to play in. I think that Arsenal needs to add one experienced player at the back.
“Of course, Arsenal will still challenge for the title next season. Arsenal should be expected to challenge for the title every year.
“Will they be ready to challenge? Other clubs will be competing with them next season who haven’t been able to do that this year. Liverpool, who are having a bad season, next season will be very different for them.
“They will be ready to challenge for the title again. We know City will be there. Chelsea, they are having a terrible season, but nobody would be surprised if they started to compete again next year. Manchester United will also be there.
“It looks like there will be a lot more teams ready to compete for the title next season. With all those clubs going for it next season, I don’t think Arsenal will win the league. That’s why this season was very, very important for them.”
When asked which positions Arsenal needed to strengthen in the summer, Gallas added: “I think that Arsenal needs to add one experienced player at the back. You want that player to create competition within the squad and put pressure on William Saliba and Gabriel.
“You also want that player to help William Saliba and Gabriel improve because they are both still young and they can improve parts of their game.”
