Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he held talks earlier this week with Liverpool owner John Henry ahead of their reported summer rebuild.
The American was in attendance as the Reds beat West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Joel Matip.
Victory over the Hammers has kept Liverpool’s slim hopes of making the top four alive with Klopp’s men now six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who have two games in hand.
It has been a poor season by the Reds’ standards after coming so close to winning an unprecedented Quadruple last campaign and many of their problems have been attributed to their midfield and defence.
That has seen them reportedly abandon their plan to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham in favour of a wider rebuild of Klopp’s squad.
It it understood that any deal for Bellingham would cost around £130m and the Liverpool hierarchy have decided money would be better spent on several players rather than just one.
And Klopp has now said that he spoke to Henry earlier this week when asked when he would be holding talks with the Liverpool owner.
Klopp told reporters: “We had talks already. We spoke last night in the hotel, we have already had a talk. I knew that he was coming.”
Some pundits have discussed Klopp’s potential departure this season but there has been unwavering support from the fanbase at Anfield.
However, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claims that Klopp will get the sack next season he doesn’t improve on their levels from this term.
McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think so. I think they do need it. It has not worked this season.
“You need to put [Virgil] Van Dijk in beside a top quality centre-half, somebody at the same level as him. They have got to sort the midfield out as well.
“They have brought in players that are not ready yet. Klopp will have another chance at it next year and if he does not do well he will be gone but he knows that.”
After their victory over West Ham, Hammers boss Moyes angrily confronted Chris Kavanagh on the field at full-time after the referee decided not to award a penalty when Thiago Alcantara’s arm hit the ball as he challenged Danny Ings in the box.
The Hammers boss was convinced VAR Neil Swarbrick should have at least told Kavanagh to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
