Sacramento, California – Detroit City FC traveled west to take on the Western Conference leaders, Sacramento Republic FC, on Saturday night and would lose by a scoreline of 1-0 at Heart Health Park thanks to a goal from Sacramento’s Luis Fernandes inside of ten minutes.

Le Rouge was looking to build off a solid defensive showing last weekend when they earned their first clean sheet of the 2023 USL season on the road to the Miami FC in a 0-0 draw.

Goals have been hard to come by for Detroit City FC this season, only having scored in one of their first six matches heading into their clash with Sacramento who, on the opposite end of the spectrum, have started the season with six clean sheets in seven matches, the second best defensive start in USL Championship history.

Sacramento would control the early phases of possession, winning the battle in the midfield and looking brave when playing out of the back. This would culminate in their opening goal as, just before the tenth minute, the Republic would play a ball in from a wide position. The ball was never fully dealt with by the Le Rouge backline and then Luis Fernandes took a strike from an awkward angle but the finish was pure and it was good enough for the 1-0 lead.

Detroit City FC would look dangerous on a handful of occasions on the counter-attack, taking advantage of Sacremento’s free-flowing play and looking to exploit the space in behind the defenders. This would result in a few half-chances from forward Ben Morris who was unable to find the target in this match.

Le Rouge would win the possession battle, 53% to 47% after 90 minutes. Sacramento ended the match with 11 total shots with four on target and Le Rouge would get seven shots away but were unable to force a save out of Sacramento’s goalkeeper.

Detroit City FC had a positive bit of injury news from this match, seeing the return of defender Devon Amoo-Mensah to the Starting XI. Amoo-Mensah played all 90 minutes, completing 60/69 of his pass attempts (87%), had two clearances and seven recoveries. Amoo-Mensah was named the Man of the Match for his performance.

Detroit City FC’s next match in the USL Championship is scheduled for April 29 when the Tampa Bay Rowdies visit town, tickets for that match are available and can be purchased at detcityfc.com/tickets, Le Rouge is also welcoming Minnesota United…
