Arsene Wenger thinks Manchester City look “tired” after beating Bayern Munich and he reckons Arsenal could hold a key “advantage” in the title race.
City closed the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal over the weekend with Pep Guardiola’s side beating Leicester City 3-1 before the Gunners could only draw on the road at West Ham.
Arsenal are still four points clear of second-placed City but the Citizens have a game in hand and the two sides have to face each other at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday.
Man City are now the favourites among many pundits and supporters to pip Arsenal to the title because most of Guardiola’s squad have won a title before.
But legendary former Arsenal manager Wenger saw tiredness creep into City’s game towards the end of their 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, which saw the Citizens reach the semi-finals 4-1 on aggregate.
Wenger said on beIN Sport: “Arsenal still has their fate in their hands. If they win the game they will win the championship.
“Like Guardiola said tonight City is tired. I felt really they finished tired in the last 10 or 15 minutes (against Bayern) and maybe Arsenal can take advantage of that because Arsenal plays nothing else, just the championship and they play on Friday night after they have five days to prepare this game.
“Physically they could have an advantage and surprise City that’s what I hope of course but let’s see. I still think we will win it.”
Manchester City will now face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals as their reward for beating Bayern Munich while AC Milan and Inter Milan clash in the other tie.
Guardiola’s men take on Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Saturday before playing Premier League leaders Arsenal four days later.
Speaking about their performance against Bayern, Guardiola told reporters: “I’m so happy – three years in a row in the semi-finals of the Champions League against an incredible team. But we struggled in the first half and 4-1 doesn’t show the two games. Fortunately, they missed their chances.
“We defended well and in the second half we were much better. The only regret is we didn’t have more sequences of passes. You have to have more passes against a team of that quality.
“But apart from that, congratulations to all at Manchester City and thank you to all our fans who came to Munich.”
