Winning the UEFA Champions League remains a dream for any player in club football. The competition sees the best teams and players on the planet compete to be crowned the creme-de-la-creme of European football.

Some of these names may surprise you, given the continental giants that they represented in their careers, while others are famous for being at the right places at precisely the wrong times.

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona is the greatest footballer of all time so he has to come top of this list. That’s just the way it is.

Maradona won the World Cup virtually on his own in 1986 but he never got his hands on the European Cup. The only European trophy he won in his career was the 1989 UEFA Cup with Napoli.

In his days though there was no Champions League and the European Cup was a knockout competition for champions. You couldn’t qualify for it by finishing second, third or fourth.

Maradona played in it twice with Napoli. In 1987/88 they were knocked out by Real Madrid and in 1990/91 by Spartak Moscow.

Ronaldo Nazario

Considered by many as the greatest striker of all-time, Ronaldo Nazario had everything you needed from a striker and more. The Brazilian won everything in football, individually and collectively, except the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo’s trophy cabinet boasts 18 trophies for club and country. This tally includes two FIFA World Cup and Copa America trophies, a La Liga title with Real Madrid and a Copa del Rey with FC Barcelona among others. Not to mention, he won three FIFA World Player of the Year and two Ballons d’Or. Ronaldo is also the only player to represent the two Milan clubs along with Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
