Man City midfielder’s agent rubbishes claims club icon has agreed contract with European giants

Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan speaks to his teammates during a game

Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has not reached a pre-contract agreement with La Liga leaders Barcelona, the player’s agent has revealed.

Gundogan is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning Barcelona are obviously interested in bringing him in.

The Blaugrana’s financial situation means they have mostly been limited to signing free agents in recent transfer windows.

They are believed to be leading the race to sign the German international, with Arsenal also reportedly interested.

Recently, there have been some reports that Gundogan has already agreed to join Barcelona.

However, the player’s uncle and agent has quashed those rumours.

Speaking to AS, Ilhan Gundogan has said his client is yet to decide where his future lies.

He said: “I am surprised where the stories come from about an agreement closed for many weeks. There is still no agreement with any club.

“It is not yet decided where he will play in the next few years.”

Ilhan added: “Ilkay can still win three major trophies this season as captain of Manchester City. That’s the only thing he’s focused on right now.”

Gundogan has become an icon at the Etihad having racked up nearly 300 appearances for Man City.

The 32-year-old has helped Pep Guardiola’s side win four Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup in less than seven years at the club.

Now club captain following Fernandinho’s exit last year, Gundogan’s age means he faces a huge decision as this contract will likely be one final big payday.

The same AS report states that Gundogan is expected to be ‘one of the biggest names in the upcoming transfer market’.

It is confirmed that Barcelona have the German on their ‘agenda’ ahead of the summer transfer window, with some reports saying an offer has been made.

Barca signed four players for free last summer, including midfielder Franck Kessie.

They made as many the year prior and it is unclear whether or not they will have the funds to sign anything but free agents this summer.
