April 13, 2023 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today it had acquired Defender Oskar Ågren on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes for the 2023 season. The move is pending league and federation approval.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to come here and be a part of this club,” said Ågren about the loan. “I’m looking forward to getting on the field and winning soccer games with the Switchbacks.”

Ågren, 24, arrives in Colorado Springs after starting the season on the roster in San Jose. The defender appeared in three games during the 2022 MLS season, all of which were starts, totaling 250 minutes played. He notched a duel percentage of 83.3% and secured four interceptions.

A native of Sweden, Ågren was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft at 13th overall out of Clemson University. A pick that San Jose traded up for, sending the 36th overall pick (2nd round) and $100,000 of General Allocation Money to DC United in compensation.

In his three seasons at Clemson University, Ågren played in 61 matches for the Tigers, netting six goals from the back line and also adding seven assists. With career highs in both goals (5) and assists (3) in his final season, Ågren’s value grew to professional clubs as he led Clemson to a National Title. In 2021 alone, Ågren was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s First-Team Best XI, Top Drawer Soccer’s No. 3 Overall Player, College Soccer News First-Team All American, First-Team All-South Region, and NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team.

“Oskar is a person who is committed to his progression in the game and we really like the fact that he wanted to come here to push his development,” said Head Coach and GM Stephen Hogan. “As a player, we have watched him since his college days at Clemson and now at San Jose. He’s very composed and shows high quality with the ball at his feet. And [he] has a real ability to break lines with both feet. We are excited to see him grow with us while competing to win games at our level.”
