Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag has said his side ‘lost control’ as Sevilla came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
It was a Europa League quarter-final first leg to forget for the Red Devils, who were in cruise control against a Sevilla side that did not look like scoring.
However, with the score at 2-0 after 62 minutes, Ten Hag brought off Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes, which had a negative effect on his side’s overall performance.
Furthermore, the Dutch manager was forced to bring off Raphael Varane at half-time after he picked up a knock.
It all began to go Pete Tong for Man Utd when Lisandro Martinez was carried off the pitch with what looked like a serious injury.
After the match, Ten Hag confirmed it is not an Achilles injury as first feared.
With Man Utd down to ten men, they surrendered their two-goal lead with own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire.
Ten Hag admitted his side ‘lost control’ and thinks they should have ‘killed the game’ off.
“We had the game in our hand,” he told BT Sport. “We were 2-0 up and should’ve scored three or four – the game was totally on us.
“Unlucky moments with injuries, we had to make some subs with injuries then we lost the control.
“We conceded two own goals, that’s bad luck but we have to deal with it. We have to learn and have to kill the game but everything is open.
“When we didn’t get the third and got some injuries we lost the rhythm in the game. We played well in the first half with a lot of belief, scored two great goals for Sabitzer and we could’ve scored even more, then after half time we lost control of the game.
“I know we can do better with these players in the last part of the game and we needed to be more composed, it was not a nice night.”
Ten Hag responded when asked about the injuries to Martinez and Varane: “We’ve seen Lisandro drops out after a moment where there was no opponent involved so it does not look great.
“I can’t say [how serious it is] at this moment, the same with Rafa.”
Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer scored both of Man Utd’s goals and was very frustrated his side conceded “two stupid goals”.
“I have problems finding the right words,” the Austrian international said. “It was like a rollercoaster game.
“We had to finish the game off and at the end it’s a draw and it’s not what we wanted.
“We had the chances [to finish the game off]. We controlled the game but…
