Washington, D.C. – The Washington Spirit and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) announced an official partnership today at Excel Academy in Washington, D.C., an all-girls public school in Ward 8 that focuses on academic achievement and self-esteem, empowering students to make positive, ethical choices.

The partnership aligns both organizations’ goals of creating better health and equity for shared communities in Washington, D.C. CareFirst will work closely with the Spirit to address topics such as the importance of safety and preventive care, the role of youth sports in developing future community leaders and more.

“We are thrilled to welcome CareFirst as the official health insurance partner of the Washington Spirit,” said Washington Spirit President of Business Operations Emma May. “The two organizations have similar missions and goals – to support women who are playing soccer at the highest level, and to positively impact the community where we work, serve and play.”

More than a logo on a scoreboard, this is a unique partnership for a healthcare insurer and sports team. The organizations worked together to identify community partners that would best serve Washington, D.C. Collectively, the organizations decided to provide funding and support to DC Scores and Excel Academy to further various opportunities for children in the District.

“This partnership is another opportunity for us to eliminate barriers to health equity and improve health outcomes at a community level,” said CareFirst Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, Mack McGee. “They’re teaching valuable lessons both on and off the playing field, by giving every child access to the kinds of skill-building needed to thrive so they’re empowered to become physically and emotionally healthy adults.”

On September 3, CareFirst will be the presenting sponsor of the club’s D.C. Ward Night theme night taking place post-World Cup at Audi Field. CareFirst will celebrate the rich history of the city and its diverse neighborhoods, amplifying the impact the partnership between the two organizations will bring to the District.

The Spirit’s next home match will kick off on Saturday, April 22 when the club hosts the Houston Dash at 7 p.m. EST.
