Chelsea criticised for star’s situation, with Bayern Munich move mooted as Tuchel ‘will want’ him

Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Chelsea, August 2023

Frank McAvennie has revealed he “does not get” why Chelsea have not come to a contract agreement with Mason Mount, while suggesting Thomas Tuchel “will want him”.

Mount has become one of the Blues’ most important players in the past few seasons. His role was a crucial one during his first season, given the side could not spend.

In his debut top-flight campaign, the Englishman scored seven goals and provided six assists. He’s been a mainstay of the side since, with each manager that’s come and gone identifying him as a vital cog in the system.

Last season was Mount’s best in terms of production in front of goal. He scored 11 times in the league and provided 10 assists in 32 games, only missing the others through injury.

It’s somewhat surprising, then, that Chelsea have not yet been able to come to an agreement with the star over a new deal. Mount reportedly wants to become one of the club’s top earners, yet there has been no sign of a breakthrough in discussions.

McAvennie thinks that’s a baffling situation given his role in the side.

“It has been all over the place,” he told Football Insider.

“If Mount has been told that he can go I just do not get it. I think he is a wonderful talent and he is the one player I would have tied down.”

If Chelsea can’t come to an agreement with Mount, they’ll reportedly sell him this summer, guaranteeing they at least make some money from the situation.

While that’ll be to their detriment, McAvennie thinks Bayern Munich could be the side to benefit.

“I am surprised that Chelsea are going to let him go but I am not surprised that Tuchel will want to take him. He has trained him, he knows how he is and what he is all about. I know he is going to go somewhere,” he added.

Indeed, Tuchel, having taken over at Bayern in March, will want to put his stamp on the side. Given Mount was so effective under him at Chelsea, there’s no reason to suggest that wouldn’t be the same in Germany, if he was to take him.

There’ll likely be competition if he does want to. Liverpool and Manchester City have both been linked and a recent report states the former are ‘edging closer’ to the snare.

Links with Bayern have also been mentioned, though it’s been suggested Mount has not yet ‘been discussed between Tuchel and Bayern’s decision-makers’.
