Pundit confident Liverpool ‘will move’ Klopp on ‘in October’ if poor form remains next season

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool, April 2023

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Liverpool “will move” Jurgen Klopp on “if they’re struggling again in October”, as “you can’t have two bad seasons in a row”.

Amid the madness of the Premier League manager market at the moment, it seems nobody is safe. Indeed, 12 managers have been given the boot by their respective club’s so far in the current campaign.

Amid Liverpool’s poor form, it’s little wonder whispers of Klopp’s dismissal are circling.

The Reds are currently eighth in the league, having lost nine of the 28 games they have played so far this season. Last term, they finished second and lost just twice all season.

Klopp recently referred to himself as the “last man standing” and admitted he’s still in the job “because of the past”, hinting that had he not had success previously, he’d likely be gone.

He’s far from the only person to have identified that. Former Premier League striker Agbonlahor agrees he’s still in a job because of what he’s done previously, and he feels he should be scared of the boot.

“I’d be frightened if I were Klopp,” he told Football Insider.

“If he didn’t have the credit in the bank, he’d be sacked by now. If Abramovich was the owner, he’d be sacked.”

He also feels the Liverpool boss could actually be on the way out if things don’t improve next season.

“Next season, they won’t be playing Champions League football – and if they’re struggling again in October, the board have no choice,” Agbonlahor added.

“It’s not working. He’s had his time at the club, and they will move him on.

“You can’t have two bad seasons in a row. It’s just not good enough. He keeps bringing it up because he knows it’s very possible.

“He’s under big pressure, and he has got to set his team up to show fight next season, otherwise it could end very soon for him.”

Indeed, another bad season should be the blow that knocks him down for good. He’ll know that too, and will be trying to do his all to ensure it doesn’t happen.

Squad improvements are a must: the snare of Jude Bellingham has been mooted for a while. Recent reports have stated the Reds are in the driving seat for that transfer, as the youngster is ‘willing’ to sign.

A quality player like that joining would go a long way, but he’d need more support to turn things around.

Klopp will hope he gets that, or his position may not be tenable for much longer.
