Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has reportedly informed the club he ‘wants to leave’ in one scenario, as another midfield signing this summer ‘could push him to quit’.
McTominay has been a consistent performer for the Red Devils over the past few seasons. He’s not exactly a world-class player, but to get into the Manchester United side at all you need to have something about you.
He’s been in the side a lot over the past few seasons. Indeed, the Scotsman played 32 Premier League games two seasons ago and 30 last season.
However, the signings of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro have pushed him down the pecking order this term.
He’s still played 20 league games this season, but only nine of those have come from the start, and his game time has been aided by Eriksen’s injury and Casemiro’s suspensions.
That lack of monutes seems to have prompted an important decision from the academy product.
Football Insider reports McTominay has ‘informed the United board he wants to leave in the summer if dropped further down the pecking order’.
Indeed, it suggests a ‘further midfield signing this summer could push him to quit’.
The looming presence of Marcel Sabitzer could have a big say in his future. In fact, it might have already had some bearing on his decision making.
Indeed, were it not for the loan signing of the Austrian – who has played 10 times in all competitions since joining in January – McTominay might have found himself playing more often.
There is a suggestion that the loanee could join permanently in the summer, too. Indeed, trusted source Florian Plettenburg stated in April Sabitzer ‘can imagine joining’ the Red Devils permanently.
There are likely to be talks before the end of the season regarding the potential signing. If that does happen, McTominay’s role would continue to be a smaller one than it once was.
As such, he could be forced to up sticks. That might not be a bad thing for United – he’s clearly not a crucial player, evidenced by his time on the pitch this season.
What’s more, a recent report stated he’d be put up for sale as part of a ‘brutal clear-out’. As such, United might already be getting ready to see the back of him and get some funds back in return.
It might not be bad for McTominay either. A footballer who has played a lot of games – more than 200 – for one of England’s biggest clubs will not be without suitors.
