Bayer Leverkusen have ‘taken precautions’ in case Jeremie Frimpong leaves the club amid interest from Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
The German club have signed Brazilian right-back Arthur from America Mineiro, who could fill in for the Dutchman next season if he leaves.
This season, Frimpong has scored eight goals and made nine assists, statistically making him one of the most creative wing-backs in Europe.
With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see several big European clubs queuing up for his signature.
However, as previously reported by Football365, he will not come cheap, with Leverkusen slapping a €50m (approx £44m) price tag on the 22-year-old.
Erik ten Hag has generally opted to play Diogo Dalot at right-back this season, with the defender earning a one-year contract extension thanks to some fine performances – although, this is only valid until 2025.
However, the manager has been less convinced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who almost left Old Trafford in January and is still being linked with a departure.
Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, along with Frimpong, is another key target for the Red Devils, so Ten Hag will have to decide which to push for this summer.
Frimpong is much better going forward, though, so a move for the youngster would probably make the most sense for Man Utd.
But, as mentioned, they will face competition for his signature.
Barcelona are particularly desperate to sign a right-back, with Xavi currently being forced to play the likes of Ronald Araujo, Sergi Roberto and Jules Kounde out of position in that area this season.
But, the Catalan’s ongoing financial issues could put a €50m signing out of reach at the moment, so they may be forced to look elsewhere.
Interestingly, Barca are also targeting a move for Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo, who is currently on loan at… Bayern Munich.
Bayern are reportedly unwilling to pay the £61m fee required to sign the Portuguese international permanently and the Spanish giants are poised to sign him on loan should Pep Guardiola make him available again.
This would then leave the German champions in need of a new right-back and Frimpong would be an excellent option given his performances in the Bundesliga.
Frimpong’s current deal at Leverkusen is set to run out in 2025, so Man Utd may be able to negotiate their price tag down slightly.
But with plenty of teams in the race, they could still have a bidding war on their hands this…
