Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has criticised Antonio Conte for his outburst which ended up costing him his job at Tottenham.
Spurs announced on Sunday evening that Conte had left the club by mutual consent after 17 months at the helm in north London.
Speaking after the announcement, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy revealed the reason for the decision, he said: “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place.
“We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters.”
There had been widespread reports that Tottenham were going to sack Conte all last week with his rant following their 3-3 draw against Southampton understood to be the final straw.
Conte called his players “selfish” as they threw away a two-goal lead towards the end of their match at Saint Mary’s Stadium, while he also seemed to critcise Levy and the Tottenham board for the club’s culture.
“We are not a team. We are eleven players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart,” Conte said.
“Until now I try to hide the situation but now, not anymore.
“Here’s always the same, every season. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market, the coach has responsibility. But the players, where are the players? I see only 11 players that play for themselves!”
The Italian added: “They are used to it here at Tottenham. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure, or under stress. It is easy this way!
“Tottenham story’s this for 20 years, there’s the owner but they never won something. Why?”
And former Man Utd midfielder Scholes appears to have sided with Tottenham over their sacking of Conte in a now-deleted Instagram post.
Scholes wrote (via talkSPORT): “Here we go talkSPORT. A manager gets sacked so everyone blames recruitment, and a top class manager blames lack of ambition.
“Why don’t any managers say when they’re smiling and shaking hands with a player at their press conference, ‘I don’t like this player, I think [he] will eventually get me the sack.’
“Saves the same old bulls**t once they are sacked or leave.”
