STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC midfielders Mukwelle Akale, Tobias Otieno and John Murphy Jr. were named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week One after stellar performances in Friday’s season opener.


Tormenta FC obtained its first victory of the 2023 USL League One season after defeating North Carolina FC on the road. Akale scored Tormenta FC’s first goal of the season, securing the three points for Tormenta FC.

Akale was just one of two players to score from open play in Week One, bagging the match-winner in the 34th minute. Returning for his second season in Statesboro, Akale reeled in six recoveries, completed 18 of his 21 passes and won 75% of his duels.

The only player with an assist in Week One, John Murphy Jr. hit the ground running in his Tormenta FC debut. Along with his assist on Akale’s match-winner, Murphy Jr. gathered five recoveries, completed 20 of 26 passes and won six of eight duels.

Aiming to become the first League One player to claim three consecutive league titles, Otieno extended his form of consistency with the Ibises on Friday, winning 100% of his duels and 86% of his tackles to go along with 10 recoveries.

Pablo Jara and Nick Akoto were named to the Best of the Rest, featuring as substitutes in USL League One’s Team of the Week.

Tormenta FC is set to open up its title-defending season at home against the Charlotte Independence next Saturday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia.

South Georgia is poised to make a strong push for the championship title in the upcoming season. Fans can secure their seats at the new Tormenta Stadium ahead of 2023, with Season Tickets now available for purchase.
