Mount enters the final year of his Blues contract this summer and is attracting interest from Liverpool.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is expected to bring in at least two new midfielders in the summer transfer window. Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham is reportedly the club’s number-one target.
Mount strikes me as a player who would suit Klopp’s system down to the ground, though the player seems like he would prefer to stay at Stamford Bridge.
The England midfielder is reportedly asking to be one of Chelsea’s highest earners following two busy transfer windows which saw some huge contracts signed.
The Blues are reluctant to pay Mount what he wants, however, even if he is a product of their youth academy.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson is evidently a huge fan of the 24-year-old – who was Chelsea’s “best player” in 2021-22.
Merson thinks the Londoners should pay Mount whatever he wants and that a move elsewhere would be “bad business”, especially if he joined Liverpool, who would make the Reds “a title-contending team” if he is brought in alongside Bellingham.
“Mason Mount was by far Chelsea’s best player last season,” Merson wrote for Sky Sports. “He was outstanding.
“It’s different when you come through the ranks at a football club because you cost nothing. When you get bought for a lot of money you’re viewed as more of an asset.
“Whoever gets Mason Mount has got the biggest result ever. The kid can play.
“It’s bad business by Chelsea – they should give him what he’s asking for.
“You don’t offload your best players. There are so many players that need to get shipped out of this Chelsea squad before Mount.
“When you hear whispers of the teams that want to buy him that tells you everything you need to know.
“If Liverpool go and get Mount and then Jude Bellingham, who could also go to Liverpool, you’ve got a title-contending team. Why would you want to chance that? Why would you make them stronger?
“I’m a huge fan of Mount, he’s a top-class player.
“He’s not playing at the moment because of his contract situation. With the size of the squad, they aren’t going to select a player who won’t sign a new contract.”
Mount has withdrawn from the England squad ahead of the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
