Chelsea make ‘crazy’ €40m plus Mendy offer for goalkeeper who moved for free last summer

Reported Chelsea target Andre Onana during a match

Chelsea have reportedly made a “crazy” offer of €40million plus Edouard Mendy for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Onana joined the Serie A giants from Ajax on a free transfer last summer following nine months on the sidelines after banned diuretic furosemide was found in his urine.

The 26-year-old took his wife’s prescription medicine, after looking for aspirin to cure a headache. This explanation was accepted on appeal when the ban was reduced from 12 months.

The former Ajax goalkeeper has got his career back on track following his move to Italy.

Inter are currently third in Serie A and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but stand no chance of winning the league title with Napoli 19 points clear of second.

Despite their progress in Europe, many are regarding this as a disappointing season for the Nerazzurri.

Saying that, Onana has been one of their best players, conceding 15 goals in 17 league encounters and seven in eight in the Champions League, keeping five clean sheets in Europe’s premier competition.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper signed a five-year contract when he joined Inter, but is being linked with a move elsewhere.

Several Premier League clubs are in the market for a new goalkeeper, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham.

The Blues signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper in 2018, but the Spaniard has struggled in England.

Mendy’s arrival in 2020 changed Chelsea’s fortunes as he quickly established himself as Frank Lampard’s no. 1 and one of the best ‘keepers in world football.

However, the Senegalese international has not been himself over the last year or so.

Mendy lost his place in the team upon Graham Potter’s arrival and has since sustained a long-term shoulder injury.

Although Kepa has impressed during Potter’s stint in charge, it is expected that Chelsea will sign a new ‘keeper in the summer transfer window.

And according to Sport Mediaset journalist Marco Barzaghi (via Sport Witness), the Premier League club have made a “crazy offer” to sign Onana from Inter.

Barzaghi reportedly said: “After Onana’s convincing performances, according to English sources, Chelsea strongly targeting the Nerazzurri goalkeeper, and to convince the management of the beloved player, they would have made a crazy offer: Mendy plus €40m in compensation.”

TuttoMercatoWeb reported last week that Onana is a target for Chelsea as Potter ‘wants a new goalkeeper’.
