Man Utd star Antony failed to keep Casemiro promise following his red card against the Saints

Man Utd winger Antony puts his hands round Casemiro to console him

Man Utd winger Antony promised that he would “win” their match against Southampton after Casemiro was sent off on Sunday.

Casemiro saw red on 34 minutes as the Red Devils were held to a goalless draw at home with both sides having chances to win the game.

Anthony Taylor initially gave the Brazilian a yellow card for his tackle on Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz but he was told to have another look by the VAR.

After reviewing the footage, the referee upgraded Casemiro’s punishment to a red card with the Man Utd midfielder skimming the top of the ball before following through into Alcaraz’s shin.

Casemiro was visibily upset to cost his team and compatriot Antony attempted to comfort him in the immediate aftermath of his sending off.

Antony pulled Casemiro towards him after the decision and said: “I will win this game for you. I will.”

But Antony was unable to come good for his Man Utd team-mate as he was substituted 15 minutes before full-time by Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

Raphael Varane thinks Casemiro – who he spent eight years with the Brazil international at Real Madrid – will be a huge miss for the team.

“He’s a player who’s very important for us,” Varane told the club’s official website.

“He brings balance to the team and to the squad, but we have a great squad and we have to find another balance without him.

“But we have good players in every position on the pitch and we’re ready for the next games.

“I think he was very disappointed because nobody wants to get out of the pitch before the end but as I say it’s part of football. It was obviously very disappointing but we can focus on the next games and that’s it.”

When asked for his opinion on the sending off, Varane replied: “I think about decisions by the referee I keep my opinions to myself.

“We can’t be happy with the decision he takes but that’s part of football.”

Despite losing 7-0 to Liverpool last weekend in a ‘freak result’ and being held by Southampton yesterday, Varane thinks Man Utd are still in a “good moment”.

Varane added: “I think if you take apart [away] the game against Liverpool, we were in a good moment and good results, so we have to keep the confidence.

“Obviously, we want a good result to keep the rhythm. I think the winning mentality is here in this group.

“We want to win every game so we have to fight and be ready for Thursday.”
