Arsenal told signing of ‘fantastic player’ would ‘obliterate’ all of Mikel Arteta’s work

Arsenal news: Neymar celebrates a goal with Kylian Mbappe

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent believes “fantastic” Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar would be a disastrous signing for Arsenal.

PSG are reportedly looking to offload the world’s most expensive footballer in the summer.

Neymar’s season is over after he suffered an ankle injury against Lille last month and his inability to stay fit throughout an entire campaign probably means no team will be willing to take him on.

The sort of transfer fee the Ligue 1 club would ask for, on top of the player’s wages, would be astronomical, further hinting that Neymar will be a PSG player in 2023-24.

A lot has been said about Neymar as a personality and the off-the-field drama he is often associated with.

Pushing that all to the side, he is a bloody good footballer.

And former Tottenham striker Bent – who supports Arsenal – admits that Neymar is a “fantastic player” but believes the “baggage” he comes with means Mikel Arteta should avoid him if he is offered the chance to make the signing.

“I wouldn’t like him (at Arsenal),” Bent told talkSPORT. “The baggage he comes with…

“(Neymar is a) fantastic player. But he is the sort of player who could go into the dressing room and obliterate everything. Neymar in his pomp was unbelievable. But there are times when things don’t fit.”

Although Neymar is a world-class talent, I think that the vast majority of Arsenal fans would probably agree with Bent.

There are no current reports that suggest the Premier League leaders are interested in signing the Brazilian superstar, despite certain outlets loving to make up far-fetched transfer rumours.

A lot of what Arteta has created at Arsenal in recent years has been about the personalities of the players he has signed.

Martin Odegaard joined permanently in the summer of 2021 after spending six months on loan and is already club captain.

Meanwhile, players like Aaron Ramsdale and Benjamin White have shone and added some steel to the Gunners team in the process.
