Laura Woods tips ‘amazing’ ex-Chelsea boss to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham

Woods on Tottenham manager

TalkSPORT presenter Laura Woods has suggested that former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel should replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tuchel has been out of work since he was let go by Chelsea back in September. He largely did a positive job at the Blues as he helped them win the Champions League for the second time.

Conte meanwhile has been Tottenham’s head coach for around 16 months. He guided them to a top four finish last season but they have a fight on their hands to repeat that feat this term.

Spurs are currently fourth in the Premier League but they will be overtaken by Liverpool and Newcastle if their rivals make the most of their games in hand.

The Italian head coach is out of contract in the summer and it was reported on Wednesday morning that he is ‘increasingly likely’ to leave Spurs before next season.

Tottenham are being linked with Mauricio Pochettino, but Woods feels that they would be wise to appoint Tuchel instead.

“I just don’t know whether it’s ever good to go back,” Woods said on talkSPORT.

“Of course, we can look at the ones where they did go back and it did go well – Mourinho going back to Chelsea and that sort of stuff – but I don’t know with Mauricio Pochettino whether it would be the best move for him.

“I actually think Thomas Tuchel would be a great shout. Managers who come back into the league and who have something to prove.

“Seriously, though, I just think with Thomas Tuchel, in the small space of time that he came into Chelsea and arranged that team – they’d already got top four from Frank Lampard so they had a lot of young talent, he made a few changes and won the Champions League.

“I don’t know, I just think that kind of personality that he has, to go into a team like Spurs, who just look like they are devoid of enjoyment at the moment and lacking something.

“Go get the best out of Son, go and put a rocket up them. I honestly think that would be a great fit. I could be wrong, but I love Thomas Tuchel, I think he’s amazing.”

Spurs have exited the Carabao Cup and FA Cup prematurely but they remain in contention in the Champions League.

The London outfit are 1-0 behind on aggregate heading into Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 second leg against AC Milan.

Conte is back in the dugout for this game. He has been missing in recent games as he returned to Italy to recover from an operation to remove his gallbladder.
