Man Utd player told he has ‘no business being at this level’ after 7-0 Liverpool horror show

Man Utd star slammed by pundit

Man Utd forward Wout Weghorst has been told that he has “no business” playing for such a big club following the club’s 7-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Weghorst joined Man Utd on loan during the January transfer window. He was brought in as a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club by mutual consent last December.

The forward scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas earlier this season but he has struggled for goals in a United shirt. He has only netted one goal in 14 appearances.

The Netherlands international has played more of a supporting role in recent weeks as a number ten. This worked well in the Europa League against Barcelona but he was among the players who fared poorly at Anfield as United lost 7-0 against Liverpool.

Dutch journalist Johan Derksen has now argued that Weghorst has “no business” playing for a club like Man Utd.

“I’ve been watching and then I think: Weghorst, you really have no business at this level,” Johan Derksen told Vandaag Inside (via Sport Witness).

“I don’t know what Erik wants with him. If you win, then you can say it works with him.

“Whether that’s (the recent run) down to Weghorst… I can’t imagine it. At Burnley, he never performed anything.”

Paul Scholes has also questioned Weghorst’s ability, as he is not good enough to play for Man Utd.

“Weghorst is in the team to be a defender, really,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“You’re talking about a Manchester United No.10 or a centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive.

“He’s the one who runs about and rats about and everybody likes playing with him because he does that. But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United… it’s not there.”

He added: “Of course, I have played in some different positions, it’s also new to me. What I can bring to the team? I hope lots of energy, I hope the belief. Of course, I am someone who is giving a lot of effort against the ball also, try to get high pressure on the opponent, get the guys around me free.

“Of course, get myself also free and scoring goals so that’s definitely a point we need to improve, because I know I’m capable of bringing that also to the team. That’s something that so far hasn’t worked as we wanted, as we planned, but overall I’m just somebody who is giving his all to the team with a lot of energy and trying to win all these trophies we’re still capable of.”
