Jamie Carragher picks out the signing Liverpool need more than Jude Bellingham next summer

Carragher advises Liverpool

Jamie Carragher thinks Jude Bellingham would be a “brilliant” signing for Liverpool but he thinks getting a defensive midfielder is more important.

The Reds have already secured one signing in the winter transfer window as they have brought in Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven to give them more options in attacking areas.

Their focus is expected to turn to sign a midfielder or two with moves expected to complete next summer.

They are being heavily linked with Bellingham ahead of next summer and it is understood that they have been working on a deal to sign the teenage sensation for some time.

The 19-year-old is a special talent and he has been playing beyond his years for Borussia Dortmund over the past couple of seasons.

Bellingham also shone for England at the World Cup as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Liverpool face a battle to sign Bellingham though as Real Madrid and Man City are also hoping to sign him.

James Milner is also out of contract next summer but it is possible that he will stay on for another season.

“Right now, Liverpool tonight had Jordan Henderson – who isn’t as energetic as three or four years ago – but then the technical player like Thiago – and Harvey Elliott, Carvalho has played there at times.

“This midfield isn’t what you expect or what Jurgen Klopp really wants. It’s not just about certain players and a certain age, because the younger players are more technical than high energy and I talk about Harvey Elliott and Carvalho, it feels like Liverpool’s midfield isn’t high energy.

“There’s talk of looking to bring in Jude Bellingham, why wouldn’t you, he’s a great player…
