Wayne Rooney’s DC United ‘has reached verbal agreements with Leeds over signing midfielder Mateusz Klich’… despite Jesse Marsch wanting to keep him at the Premier League team

DC United is making progress in its pursuit of Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich with verbal agreements over a move reached, according to reports.

The Poland international, who was left out of his nation’s World Cup squad for Qatar, has fallen down the pecking order under American coach Jesse Marsch at Elland Road.

And Wayne Rooney’s MLS team has been linked with a switch and is now closing in on a deal, reports MLSsoccer.com.

It is claimed that agreements have been reached verbally with DC United near to striking a deal for weeks.

Klich was a key figure in Leeds’ promotion back to the Premier League in 2020 under manager Marcelo Bielsa but has struggled for game time since Marsch took charge in February.

Marsch spoke ahead of his team’s return to action at home to Manchester City on December 28 and expressing his desire to keep him at the club.

‘There has been an enquiry about Mateusz, but from all sides we’re still cautious about whether now would be the right time to leave,’ he said this week.

‘He’s still been really important here. One of the interesting things is, he’s played the fifth most matches for me since I’ve been here.

‘He’s played 25 of 28 games. He’s one of my favorite personalities of anyone I’ve ever coached and we have a really good relationship and we’ve been open with each other in all these moments along the way.

‘I’m not sure it’s the time for him to leave, but with the 25 of 28 games, they haven’t all been starts and players would like to play a bit more.

‘We’ve had good dialogue about his role within the team and continued role within the team. That’s not set in stone.

‘He’s a guy I very much like and we still think he’s a big part of the team.’

Leeds sit just two points above the relegation zone following their thrilling 4-3 defeat by Tottenham before the World Cup in Qatar.
