Lisandro Martinez will still be “furious” over “absolutely crazy” decision not to start him in the final, according to former Man Utd defender Paul Parker.
The 24-year-old started two of Argentina’s seven matches at the World Cup with the Man Utd centre-back spending 301 minutes on the pitch in Qatar.
Argentina went on to win the World Cup final against France 4-2 on penalties but Martinez did not get on the pitch during the match.
And former Man Utd full-back Parker thinks Martinez will still be “furious” that Nicolas Otamendi started over him in the final.
“When I looked at him I never got the feeling that he didn’t want to be there,” Parker told BeMyBet. “But of course, he must have been furious that Nicolas Otamendi played instead of him, which is absolutely crazy.
“He will be disappointed. Without a shadow of a doubt. He won the final but he didn’t play in the final and that is a weird feeling.
“It’s a different feeling to win a medal and put it around your neck when you didn’t really contribute to the team on the pitch. He will return with a medal and a bad experience.”
Martinez wasn’t the only Premier League star in Argentina’s side with Alexis Mac Allister, Emi Martinez, Cristian Romero and Julian Alvarez all playing their part.
On what made the difference in the final, Brighton attacker Mac Allister said: “It is always [Lionel] Messi, it is always Messi. He is fantastic.
“I cannot explain in words what I am feeling now, I think this team gave everything on the pitch so I’m really happy for the result.”
Mac Allister added on ITV Sport: “I think he is the best player in the world, the best player of all time.
“He is amazing, he is a really nice guy, he is humble so he has everything to be the best player in history so it is amazing to share a dressing room with him and I’m very grateful.”
Rodrigo de Paul echoed Mac Allister’s sentiments about Messi, the Atletico Madrid midfielder told Gol Mundial: “Lionel Messi is the best in history. There’s no doubt about it.
“He showed it throughout the game, he showed it throughout the tournament. He was the best ever.
“He showed it even at 35. The best captain I’ve ever seen in my life.”
