Sportsmail reported on Tuesday that the Premier League side are close to an agreement over a loan deal with an obligation to buy potentially worth up to £40million.

The Molineux club had faced competition from Leeds United, Arsenal and Everton for the Brazilian after initiating talks at the end of last month.

Further positive negotiations this week have swung the deal their way and with verbal agreement now in place, the 23-year-old is expected to be the first signing of Julen Lopetegui’s era as manager.

Spaniard Lopetegui has reportedly set his sights on six new signings, with a priority on getting British players, as the struggling Midlands side look to stave off the threat of relegation.

Cunha has eight caps for Brazil but has only made one league appearance for Atletico this season.

Wolves have also been talking to Atletico about a deal for centre back Felipe and have asked Manchester United about a loan deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but face competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham for the right-back.

The signing will be the first made by the English side's new manager Julen Lopetegui (above)

Cunha signed for Atletico in August 2021 but is expected to leave after just 15 months with the LaLiga giants given his struggles to cement a place in Dieogo Simeone’s team.

During his time at the club, Cunha has scored seven goals in 54 appearances, though a significant number of his appearances have been off the bench.
