Wolves have reportedly reached a ‘full verbal agreement’ to sign Matheus Cunha on an initial loan deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
The 23-year-old had spells at RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin earlier in his career but he has been with Atletico Madrid since last year.
The striker grabbed seven goals and seven assists in his debut season for the La Liga outfit but he has fallen down the pecking order this term as his form has dipped.
Cunha has only started twice in La Liga and he did not start at all in the Champions League group stages. He is yet to score this season in his 17 outings overall.
The forward has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein stated earlier this month that Wolves were the ‘early favourites’ to sign him but Arsenal, Everton and Leeds United were also interested.
Wolves have now won the race to sign Cunha with Fabrizio Romano reporting that a ‘full agreement’ has been reached between the Premier League club and Atletico Madrid over the transfer.
Romano notes that personal terms have also been ‘agreed’.
The deal is structured as a ‘loan with an obligation to buy’. It is said that the eventual transfer fee for Cunha would be between €40-50m next summer.
The player’s ‘medical is scheduled’ and the final documents for the transfer ‘will be prepared’ in the coming days.
This report is backed up by Sky Sports. They state that Cunha is ‘set for Molineux’ and he could be involved ‘as soon as January 4 when Wolves face Aston Villa’.
Cunha will be Julen Lopetegui’s first signing as Wolves boss. The head coach revealed on Tuesday morning that their deal for Cunha was “close”.
When asked what he must do to turn things around at Wolves, he answered: “Convincing the boys that they have much more capacity.
“We will also try to improve the team in the January market – Cunha is close.”
Wolves are currently bottom of the Premier League and they are four points adrift of Everton in 17th.
Lopetegui’s side have only won twice this season and they are also the lowest scores in the league having netted just eight goals in 15 games.
Ruben Neves is their current top scorer with four goals. Wolves are currently without summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic as he suffered an ACL injury in September.
