FA identify next England boss if Southgate quits with Gerrard, Lampard ‘deemed not good enough’

England boss Gareth Southgate claps the fans

The Football Association are keen to make Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers the next England manager if Gareth Southgate quits, according to reports.

Three Lions skipper Harry Kane skied a penalty as France beat Southgate’s side 2-1 at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday to set up a semi-final clash with Morocco.

Having earlier cancelled out Aurelien Tchouameni’s fine opening strike with a well-taken spot-kick, equalling Wayne Rooney’s England 53-goal scoring record in the process, Kane blazed over a second after Olivier Giroud’s deflected header had put France back ahead.

Les Bleus held on to continue their quest to retain the World Cup, while the inquest into England’s exit began on the full-time whistle.

It will undoubtedly include speculation as to whether Southgate should remain in the job despite taking the nation to the semi-finals four years ago in Russia and to the Euro 2020 final last summer.

With little chance of Eddie Howe or Graham Potter leaving Newcastle or Chelsea anytime soon, Bullingham ‘would be forced to turn to Northern Irishman Rodgers in the hope he would be interested in the England job’.

When asked about his future after England lost to France, Southgate told reporters: “When I’ve been through the past few tournaments my emotions have been difficult to really think through properly in those following few weeks.

“It took so much energy out of you and you have so much going through your mind.

“I want to make the right decision either way because it has to be the right one to go again, or the right one not to go again and I don’t think tonight is the time to make a decision like that.

“Neither are…
