Jamie Carragher has hit back at Richard Keys after the beIN Sports presenter said his comments on the next England manager “borders on racism”.
There were reports yesterday that ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would want the Three Lions job if it became available with Gareth Southgate’s future up in the air after their World Cup exit.
The Football Association are desperate to keep him and the Daily Star claims that the chief executive Mark Bullingham is willing to offer him a ‘huge wage rise’.
It is also understood that Bullingham finds the English talent pool so ‘shallow’ that he could be ‘forced’ to see if Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers will take the position.
Another report in the Daily Telegraph reckon that the FA will consider appointing a foreign boss as they intend to select Southgate’s successor ‘from the widest possible talent pool’ with Tuchel and former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino mooted.
However, former Liverpool defender Carragher has made it clear that he thinks the England job should be reserved for Englishman.
Carragher wrote on Twitter: “The England manager should always be English!”
Former Sky Sports presenter Keys responded to the claim by accusing Carragher of a comment which “borders on racism”.
Keys replied: “What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism. The England coach should be the best person available England should not hide behind closed borders and minds.”
Carragher then quoted the “borders on racism” bit of Keys’ tweet and messaged back with a brutal jibe. The former Liverpool defender wrote: “I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalists who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky! You are a sad desperate man @richardajkeys. Ps love the blogs.”
England crashed out of the World Cup to France on Saturday and it is still unclear if Southgate will even leave – but the former Middlesbrough manager would not commit his future when asked about it over the weekend.
“I think whenever I finish these tournaments, I’ve needed time to make correct decisions,” Southgate said.
“Emotionally you go through so many different feelings. The energy it takes through these tournaments is enormous.
“I want to make the right decision, whatever that is for the team, for England, for the FA. I’ve got to be sure whatever decision I make is the right one.
