Arsenal are reportedly leading a five-team race to sign Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix – despite his agent Jorge Mendes ‘pushing for him’ to join Aston Villa.

Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil admitted last week that Felix wants to leave the club and that they will be listening to offers for their all-time record signing. 

Marca have reported that the Premier League table-toppers are the frontrunners to sign Felix, ahead of Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain.

But The Athletic has reported that Jorge Mendes is pushing for his player to join Aston Villa.

Mendes has a strong relationship with Villa’s owners, the NSWE group ran by billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, after previously helping Unai Emery take the managerial vacancy after Steven Gerrard was sacked. 

Felix could also be better suited to Arsenal, with the Gunners in need of attacking reinforcements after Gabriel Jesus underwent knee surgery.   

There has been talk that the comments made by the chief executive of Atletico Madrid could see them look to offload Felix during the January transfer window.
